With .jobs, the world is your oyster - Part 3

If you create it - they will come!

So you've taken the plunge...you've acquired a .jobs domain name. Congratulations! But now that you ’ve got it, what the heck do you do with it?

In part 1 of this article, we saw that the most important thing is to use it, and we asked a threshold question: should you point your .jobs domain somewhere, or should you create your own website? We concluded that the quickest, easiest and simplest thing to do is to point your .jobs domain at your existing HR pages.

In part 2 of this article, we looked at the pointing option and determined that we could make it even better by having your .jobs domain “stick” in your user’s browser’s address bar. That way we create the appearance that you have your own HR website. You know, HR nirvana.

There’s nothing wrong with pointing your .jobs domain…in fact, we encourage it. In part 3 of this article, however, we look at another option – creating your own HR website at your .jobs domain. In a phrase, making appearance reality.

When it comes to website creation under a .jobs domain, the sky is the limit, and the world is truly your oyster.

Think of it as a blank slate upon which you can paint the best picture of HR in your company. Want to have your own look and feel? Ok. Want the look and feel to be consistent with you company’s .com look and feel, but still be distinctly HR? Can do.

Want to incorporate the latest in back-end engines, the hippest of applicant tracking systems? Yep. Want to incorporate company culture? Sure. Want to include an internal HR resource section? Of course.

The reality is that whatever can be done on the internet can be done on your .jobs website.

Recognizing the tremendous benefit of creating an independent HR website, many companies have done so, but they’ve been forced to do it with another .com domain. Like the FBI getting fbijobs.com for HR when their main site is fbi.gov, or MBNA having mbnacareers.com when their main site is mbna.com. Sure, it works, but not nearly as well. It’s not a consistent branding experience, and you are forever fighting an uphill battle to educate candidates as to where you are on the internet. Because you’re certainly not at YourCompany.com.

Your website at your .jobs domain eliminates those problems. You get the best of both worlds – consistent branding and a unique web address. You literally can't go wrong.

Only you can decide whether it’s better for you and your company to point your .jobs domain to your current site or to create a whole new .jobs website. Many factors are involved, such as cost, time, convenience the nature of your desire.

In the end, however, you can’t go wrong either way with a .jobs domain!

3.1 - The easiest thing to do is point it to your current content.
3.2 - It is more rewarding to point it and make it stick!
3.3 - You may choose HR nirvana and create your own HR website.
